Often called the King of Chickens, the Brahma is a gentle giant (at least as far as chickens are concerned). Originally descended from Shanghai birds and crossbred with the Grey Chittagong birds of Chittagong (present-day Bangladesh), these chickens were then imported to the United States. They’re some of the largest chickens (maybe the largest chickens) to be found and have a distinctive head shape and pea comb that sets them apart from Cochin chickens (who are also bred from Shanghai birds). Brahma Chicken Height

Brahma chickens are pretty tall as well as quite wide. In fact, the Brahma can be as tall as 30 inches or 76 cm. They might not look as tall as they are because they are extremely feathered and quite heavy around the middle. The shape belies their actual height.

Brahma Chicken Weight

The Brahma chicken is a good size and looks even weightier than it is because it has such thick feathers. The modern Brahma is usually around 12 lb (5.5 kg) for roosters and 10 lb (4.5 kg) for female birds. However, they used to be much heavier at the beginning of the twentieth century!

Brahma Chicken Egg Size

Brahma eggs are quite large in size and brown in color. They weigh about 1.9 – 2 oz (55 – 60 g). Brahma hens also lay eggs quite consistently throughout the year, at an average of 2 – 3 eggs a week. 

That puts it at around 120 eggs in a year, although there might be even more. In fact, there have been records of Brahmas laying 200 eggs in a year, which is quite a lot for chickens their size.

The size of a Brahma hatchling can vary a little. Young Brahma chick hatchlings can be about 6.6 – 7.4 inches (17 – 19 cm) tall and can weigh between 1.3 and 1.7 oz (30 – 49 g).

Brahma Chicken Full Size

Everybody doesn’t favor Brahma chickens because they’re slow to mature. A Brahma chicken will probably grow to full maturity and start laying eggs at about 6 – 7 months of age. That’s a lot compared to a lot of modern breeds that start laying at 4 – 5 months.

In their adulthood, however, they do grow to be big sized chickens of 30 inches height. And Brahma hens are consistent egg layers, apart from a few short weeks during winter.

The Jersey giants are the only kind of chicken larger than the Brahma. While they aren’t as tall as a Brahma chicken, usually only standing at a height of 15 – 20 inches (38 – 50 cm) for females and 20 – 26 inches (50 – 66 cm) for males as compared to the Brahma’s 30 inches (76 cm), they’re heavier.

A female Jersey giant weighs around 10 – 12 lb (4.5 – 5.5 kg) as compared to the Brahma chicken at 10 lb (4.5 kg). As for the males, the Jersey giant weighs 13 – 15 lb (6 – 7 kg) as compared to the Brahma at 12 lb (5.5 kg).

Brahma Chicken Vs Cochin Chicken Size Comparison

Brahma chickens and Cochin chickens come from the same stock, being descended from crossbreedings with Shanghai birds. The Chinese were the ones who brought them to the United States. However, the Cochin chicken is definitely smaller than the Brahma chicken.

Cochin chickens look bigger than they are because of their fluffy feathers. But they usually average a weight of 8 lb (3.6 kg). Some roosters can weigh around 10 lb (4.5 kg). They can range from 15 – 21 inches (38 – 53 cm) in height.

However, the Cornish are a muscular breed and have very little down. They don’t look as pretty as the feathery Brahmas but are a very valued breed.
