Chimpanzee Height

Chimpanzee Size

Chimpanzees are quite an interesting monkey-looking animal. So, if you are wondering about how large these animals are in terms of their height then let me tell you that these are quite larger than the usual monkeys that you would have seen around.

The length or height of Adult chimpanzees ranges between 1 to 1.7 meters (3 to 5.5 feet), and the average standing height of the animal is about 150 cm (4 ft 11 in). Additionally, male chimpanzees are usually larger than female ones.

Range 1 to 1.7 meters 3 to 5.5 feet
Average 1.5 meters 4 ft 11 in

Chimpanzee Weight

Other than the height or length of the Chimpanzees, you can also measure and tell apart the species based on their body mass or weight.

The males of the chimpanzee species are larger than the females due to sexual dimorphism.

Therefore, male chimpanzees typically weigh between 40 and 60 kg (88.2 to 132 lb) and females between 32 and 47 kg (70.5 to 104 lb)

Chimpanzee WeightKilograms Pounds
Male40 and 60 kg88.2 to 132 lb
Female 32 and 47 kg70.5 to 104 lb

The largest of the female chimpanzees are almost about the same weight as the smallest male chimpanzee.

Baby Chimpanzee Size

Baby Chimpanzees or newborn chimps are quite smaller in terms of both height and weight than adult parent chimpanzees. As they grow older, their size keeps increasing until they are mature and reach their full size.

For instance, the newborn baby chimpanzee or the infant is only about 1.8 kg heavy (about 4 pounds) at birth. This is 40 to 60 times smaller than the adult chimpanzees. 1

Chimpanzee Brain & Teeth Size

Compared to humans, the brain of our very close relative, chimpanzees, is almost 3 times smaller.

In an experiment, researchers have found that the mean brain weight of both adolescent and adult chimpanzees was 368.1 g (+/-37.3) for females and 405.6 g (+/-39.4) for males, where +/- is the standard deviation.

In terms of their teeth size, chimpanzees have 32 teeth in their mouth (similar to that of humans) which are quite large. Their canines are much larger than humans so they can defend themselves from predators and external threats.

Chimpanzee Hand Size

In terms of the size of their hands or palms, chimpanzees have much longer fingers and shorter thumbs, which make them ideal for swinging from trees but much less useful for precise grasping. The average arm length of chimpanzees is 57.1 cm, which is a large and long measurement.

Chimpanzee Group Size

Chimpanzees are animals that live in groups or communities. Most of their daily activities, like eating, hunting, and playing around are done in their communities. Although Chimpanzees forage and travel in much smaller groups during the day, they typically live in groups of 15 to 150.

Chimpanzee Size Compared To Humans

Chimpanzee Size Compared with human

One of the closest relatives of Chimpanzees is us, humans. So how can we not compare the size of it with ourselves?

Chimpanzee adults typically stand 150 cm tall. Wild males weigh between 88 and 154 lb and 40 to 70 kg (40 to 154 lb), while females weigh between 26 and 50 kg (57 and 110 lb).

With an average height of at least 160-175 cm and a weight range of 120–183 lbs. Overall, humans are much taller than an average chimpanzee.

Animal type HeightWeight
Chimpanzee 1.5 meters (4 ft 11 in)54 to 83 kgs (120–183 lbs)
Human 5.2 to 5.9 feet60 to 80 kgs (132 to 176 lbs)

Chimpanzee Vs Gorilla Size Comparison

What if we compare the Chimpanzee’s size with other types of similar animals such as the Gorilla?

It is clear that mountain gorillas are bigger than chimpanzees—typically two to three times bigger. In particular, a gorilla’s strength is 4-6 times greater than a chimpanzee’s.

Animal type HeightWeight
Chimpanzee 1.5 meters (4 ft 11 in)54 to 83 kgs (120–183 lbs)
Gorilla 3-6 feet200-500 pounds

The Gorillas are larger as well as quite heavier than the Chimpanzees. For instance, the heaviest Chimpanzee would be quite lighter than the Gorilla.

Chimpanzee Vs Orangutan Size Comparison

One of the most useful and prominent ways of differentiating between a Chimpanzee and an Orangutan is their size.

Despite having generally similar sizes, chimpanzees and orangutans don’t have comparable physical attributes.

A chimpanzee can only lift about 250 pounds, whereas an orangutan can lift up to 500 pounds, showing that orangutans are larger and stronger than chimpanzees.

Animal type HeightWeight
Chimpanzee 1.5 meters (4 ft 11 in)54 to 83 kgs (120–183 lbs)
Orangutan 1.3 meters (4.3 feet)130 kg (285 pounds)

The Orangutans are larger and heavier than the average Chimpanzees.

Chimpanzee Vs Bonobo Size Comparison

Bonobos and Chimpanzees look quite similar. They can usually be confused with one another but you can tell one apart from the other through its size.

When standing on their back legs, chimpanzees are also marginally taller than bonobos, with males measuring an average of 4.3 feet instead of 4.2 feet for bonobo males. Female chimpanzees weigh 93 pounds on average, while female bonobos weigh around 74 pounds.

Male chimpanzees weigh about 132 pounds on average, compared to about 100 pounds for male bonobos.

Animal type HeightWeight
Chimpanzee 1.5 meters (4 ft 11 in)54 to 83 kgs (120–183 lbs)
Bonobo 115 cm (3.8 feet)39 kg (86 pounds)

Conclusion

And that was everything you need to know about the size of Chimpanzees. I hope this article was informative enough and your queries were answered.
