They have five toes with sharp, curved claws on the hind and front feet. An adult male bear can weigh anywhere from 300 to 400 pounds, and an adult female bear can weigh between 120 and 180 pounds. 

The body size of the adult can range between 4 and 7 feet. When compared to other subspecies of American Black Bear the Louisiana black bear skulls, are fairly long, flat, and narrow. They also have proportionately bigger molar teeth. 

They have a good-smelling sense but bad eyesight. They are also good swimmers and easily climb trees.

Where Are Black Bears Found In Louisiana?

Previously the Louisiana Black Bears were seen inhabitant in the forested areas of Louisiana, eastern Texas, and Mississippi. Currently, they mostly occur within the borders of Louisiana. 

The biggest populations are 56 bears in the upper Atchafalaya (Pointe Coupee Parish), lower Atchafalaya (St. Mary Parish), and 300 black bears in the Tensas River (Tensas Parish, Madison Parish, Avoyelles Parishes, and Concordia Parish). 

Sometimes there are movements, mostly of isolated young males, into eastern Texas and western Mississippi. However, resident breeding inhabitants do not presently exist in eastern Texas or Mississippi.
