Kodiak Bear Size Explained & Compared With Other Bears

Kodiak bears are a subspecies of brown or grizzly bears that can only be found in Alaska on the island of the Kodiak Archipelago.

One of the two largest bears alive today, along with the polar bear, is the Kodiak bear, which is the brown bear’s largest recognized subspecies or population.

In terms of their height, the male Kodiak bears are comparatively larger than the female Kodiak bears.

A large male, for instance, can reach heights of over 10 feet when standing on his hind legs and 5 feet when standing on all four legs.

To be more precise, when standing on all four legs, a large male Kodiak bear can reach a height of 1.5 m (4.9 ft) at the shoulder.

On the other hand, females’ shoulder heights range from 3 feet 5 inches to 4 feet (1.02-1.22 m).

The Kodiak Bear typically stands between 9 and 10 feet tall, with an overall body length of about 6.2 feet to 9.8 feet (1.9-3 m).

Kodiak Bear Weight

If we examine the size of the Kodiak bear or any other species, we find that even within the same type of animal, there is a wide range in mass.

This is largely because each Bear has a different lifestyle, habitat, and diet. Therefore, it is quite common to observe that not all Kodiak bears weigh the same amount due to significant body mass variation.

Omnivorous Kodiak Bears eat berries, plants, and grass. They also consume fish like salmon. To gain weight, they frequently consume the fish’s healthiest parts.

Compared to males, females are 30% lighter and 20% smaller. The weight range for males is 272 to 635 kg, while the weight range for females is 181 to 318 kg (399 to 701 lb) (600 to 1,400 lb).

The Kodiak bear typically weighs between 660 and 1,320 lb (300 to 600 kg), though it has been known to weigh more than 680 kg (1,500 lb). 1

Male 400 to 600 kilograms 880 to 1,320 pounds
Female 150-250 kilograms 330 – 550 pounds

Kodiak Bear Paw & Teeth Size

Every bear has paws. Their back limbs’ paws are actually longer than their front limbs’ paws.

The bears can climb trees with this aid. Additionally, the paws are broad to distribute their weight when walking over snow and ice and have long, strong claw tips to help them grasp the surface.

The paw of a Kodiak bear is roughly the size of a human hand. Their forearms end in enormous paws that can grow up to 5.9 inches long and have extremely strong claw tips.

In contrast, Bears have relatively short teeth that can be anywhere from one to a few inches long. However, their teeth are incredibly strong and sharp.

They have 12 incisors, 4 canines, 16 premolars, and 10 molars. The total number of teeth in a bear is 42, ten more than in a human.

Kodiak Bear Baby Size

Bear cubs are much smaller than their adult counterparts when they are young. In January or February, cubs are born inside the den.

At birth, they are less than a pound, have little hair, and have closed eyes. After several months of nursing, they leave the den in May or June and are between 15-20 pounds.

Furthermore, they weigh approximately 6 pounds by the time they are 6 months old. However, they grow to be enormous as adults.

Black bear adult males typically weigh 400 pounds, while adult females weigh 200 pounds on average. Bear cubs are tiny in comparison to how big they become!

Kodiak Bear Full Size

Although Kodiak bear cubs continue to get bigger and heavier as they age, there comes a point where their physical development stops.

We refer to them as having reached their full size when they rarely get bigger or heavier than that.

The Kodiak bears are the biggest bears in the world, as was previously stated. A large male can reach heights of over 10 feet on his hind legs and 5 feet when standing on all four legs. They can be as much as 1,500 pounds.

Moreover, a large male can also reach heights of over 10 feet when standing on his hind legs and 5 feet when standing on all four legs.

Kodiak Bear Litter Size

A female black bear can typically only have a certain number of offspring, known as the litter size when she is about to give birth to her young.

The average litter size is between two and three cubs, each of which weighs less than a pound at birth and is born blind and unable to walk.

Moving on, let’s make a comparison between ourselves and other species to see how big Kodiak bears are in comparison.

Even though bears and people are very different creatures with few similarities, what if these two species came face to face?

On all fours, most bears aren’t much bigger than humans, but when they stand up, they can be much taller! Because of this, Kodiak bears are much bigger than people.

The average weight of a person is 136-172 pounds (62-80 kg), whereas a bear typically weighs 500 pounds (226 kg) but can weigh up to 1,000 pounds.

In terms of size, an adult male human is typically about 5.5-5’10” tall and weighs between 160 and 180 pounds.

The typical female human is between 125 and 145 pounds in weight and stands about 5’2″-5.6 ft tall.

And comparing our size with a bear standing on its hind legs (6.2-9.8 ft), can you imagine how massive it will look?

Kodiak Bear Vs Grizzly Size Comparison

Only Kodiak bears and Polar bears are larger than Grizzly bears, which are larger than the majority of bear species. From snout to tail, they can reach a length of 8 feet and weigh up to 800 pounds.

Additionally, due to their superficial physical similarities to grizzly bears, Kodiak bears are occasionally referred to as grizzlies.

However, grizzly bears are smaller than Kodiak bears, and these two subspecies’ ranges do not cross.

According to researchers, Kodiak bears have been separated from grizzlies and other bears for about 12,000 years in terms of reproduction.

Polar bears are significantly larger than other bear species. They can range in size from 11 feet long from nose to tail to 400 to 1,700 pounds in weight. They are also incredibly large, measuring 4.3 feet on all four and 11 feet on their hind legs.

The second-largest species of bear, the Kodiak bear, weighs slightly less than polar bears, but not by much. They are 10 feet long and only miss by one foot.

Talking about the Kodiak and a tiger, a Kodiak bear would prevail over a Siberian tiger in a fight. Compared to the Siberian tiger, the Kodiak bear can weigh twice as much, have a longer body, and stand much taller. This mammal has a massive body, thick fur, and various forms of protection inside its body to enable prolonged combat.

Moving on to the comparison with a lion, the male African lion will be easily defeated by the Kodiak bear.

The ability of two lions to defeat a female and a small male Kodiak, however, is very real.

After a protracted battle, a male Kodiak of average size can defeat two lions. A male Kodiak of above-average size would require three or more opponents to defeat.

Animal type Height Weight
Kodiak BearMale: 1.5 m (4.9 ft)
