Bobcat Size Explained & Compared With Other Cat Breeds

The bobcat, also known as the red lynx, is a medium-sized North American cat with a range that stretches from southern Canada through the majority of the contiguous United States to Oaxaca, Mexico. Bobcats may appear to be cute and cuddly, but these North American felines are fierce predators.

Bobcats are small to medium-sized cats. Furthermore, due to their long legs, large paws, and large overall body size, Bobcats, also known as wildcats, are roughly twice the size of the average housecat.

Bobcats, on the other hand, vary in size across their range, with larger animals in the north and smaller animals in the south.

However, if we look at the average size of the Bobcat in terms of its length then the length is about 125 cm (50 in) including the length of its tail.

Moreover, the male and the female Bobcats have different heights. That is, the male Bobcats have a height of about 37 inches (93.9 cm) while the female one has a height of about 32 inches (81.2 cm). The male Bobcats are larger than the female ones.

But if we talk about the average height of bobcats then it ranges from 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24 in) and in terms of length it ranges from 47.5–125 cm (18.7–49.2 in) with the tail being 9 to 20 cm (3.5 to 7.9 in) long.

Bobcat Weight

The weight of a bobcat is another way to determine its size. Their weight is usually determined by their age, or how old the cat is, as well as their diet.

Bobcats are known for their ability to go long periods of time without eating, but when prey becomes available, they will gorge themselves.

They prefer small mammals that weigh between one and twelve pounds. Bobcats typically prey on eastern cottontails.

Like their height, their weight also varies from male to female. Adult males have a weight range of 6.4-18.3 kg (14-40 lb), with an average of 9.6 kg (21 lb); females have a weight range of 4-15.3 kg (8.8-33.7 lb), with an average of 6.8 kg (15 lb).

Overall the male Bobcat is heavier than the female Bobcats. The largest bobcat ever measured weighed about 22.2 kg (49 lb).

Bobcat Full Size

The Bobcats keep growing in terms of both their height and weight as they get older. However, there comes a time when the Bobcat’s growth almost stops, that is they rarely grow any longer or heavier. This is what is called their full size, which varies for both the male and the female Bobcats.

As you know by now, Bobcats are medium-sized cats with a fur ruff around the sides of their faces. They range in weight from 13 to 30 pounds, stand 21 inches tall, and are 30 to 50 inches long. Additionally, their full-grown size varies depending on their geographical locations, for example, the Northern bobcats are larger than the southern bobcats.

Bobcats are large animals, but are they really that large when compared to a human?

A full-grown Bobcat would hardly come to the knees of an adult human. If measured from their tail to their head, an adult and full-grown Bobcat would be as big as a 2-year-old human child.

This is because an average human has a height of about 5.5 to 5.9 feet and a weight of about 60 to 80 kg (132-176 lb).

While a Bobcat has a height of 1-2 feet and a weight of 6-18 kg (14-40 lb). In terms of height and weight, the Bobcat is fairly smaller and lighter.
